George Eugene Sebring Jr.'s heart was here in the Heartland of Florida. In his mid-50s – he wanted to create his dream city in his dream part of Florida. And so – he did. And he named it after himself. He told all of his friends from up north about the beautiful weather in his new town – especially in the wintertime. He encouraged them to come on down and enjoy the warm Florida sunshine. He wanted a citrus tree planted in every yard of every house. He wanted a church planted on every block. The land would be free for new church buildings.
Mr. Sebring and his wife lived in a sprawling 3-story house along Lakeview Drive at Lot # 1 (current site of our Public Library). Mr. Sebring and Evangelist Dr. Charles F. Weigle would be next-door neighbors for less than 5 years.
Early in 1927 – on the 04TH of January – at the age of almost 68 – Mr. Sebring died suddenly of acute indigestion. Earlier that day he was a speaker at a luncheon in a city about 30 miles north (in Polk County). He was in the best of health. When he returned to his house early in the evening – he felt ill. His Doctor was called. The Doctor was by his side when God brought him home that night.
Today - we remember our founder - George Eugene Sebring Jr. - two days after the 99TH anniversary of his passing. (1859-1927)
