Prehistoric Life In Florida Mural
#HistoryTuesday - Tuesday January 27TH 2026

If you've set foot in the Sebring Public Library anytime over the past 25 years - then you've probably seen the giant mural hanging inside depicting "Prehistoric Life In Florida". It showed what Florida may have looked like during the Ice Age. It was painted in 1942 by Paleoartist Charles Robert Knight (1874-1953). It was on display inside the original Sebring Post Office building at 307 North Ridgewood for over 40 years until the mid-1980s. It was also on display inside the new / current Sebring Post Office building at 518 North Ridgewood. It was finally on display inside the Sebring Public Library from 2001 to 2025.

Almost 1,400 post office murals in more than 1,300 U.S. cities nationwide by some 850 artists were funded from 1934 to 1943 under the United States Department Of The Treasury's Section Of Painting & Sculpture as part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. They were intended to bring high-quality art to newly constructed Post Offices to boost the morale of Americans during and after The Great Depression and into World War II.

Our historic mural - affectionately known as the "Saber-Tooth Cat Mural" - is coming out of storage for a special one-day appearance at our "Florida Talks" by Florida Humanities program this Thursday January 29TH 2026. Keri Watson hosts "The Barefoot Mailman And Florida's Post Office Murals” at the Jack Stroup Civic Center.

Doors open at 3:30 PM. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free. We hope that you can join us for this fascinating look back at our history here in Sebring.
