This week we celebrate the 167TH anniversary of the birthday of our city's founder - George Eugene Sebring Jr. He was born on February 15TH 1859 in the small Ohio River township of Borough in far-western Pennsylvania - now known as Vanport Township (renamed in 1970). It's about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.
He retired here to the Heartland of Florida in his early-50s. He wanted to create his dream city in his dream part of Florida - away from the more developed and populated areas of the coast and out in the wilderness and up in the hills. And so – he did. And he named it after himself. Sebring Florida was designed in 1911, settled in 1912, and incorporated in 1913.
He told all of his friends from up north about the beautiful weather in his new town – especially in the wintertime. He encouraged them to come on down and enjoy the pure air and warm sunshine. He wanted a citrus tree planted in every yard of every house. He wanted a church planted on every block. The land would be free for new church buildings.
He and his wife lived in a sprawling 3-story house along Lakeview Drive at Lot # 1 (current site of our Public Library).
