AREA - Sebring has grown a little in size since then. It's up to almost 16½ square miles now due to annexations.
HOSPITALS - Highlands General Hospital is "about to be constructed", and groundbreaking would occur on January 28TH 1964. It opened in March 1965 as a 126-bed hospital. Walker Memorial Hospital was located in the former Lake Lilian Hotel & Casino in Avon Park for almost 50 years. (Many of our locals were born there.) In 1997 it moved to its current location in Sun 'N Lake and renamed Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center. (We know it today as AdventHealth.)
RADIO - WJCM still exists today after 75 years. It went on-the-air in 1950 at 960 AM, and it stayed there until 1999 when it moved over to 1050 AM. We know it today as "Highlands ESPN Radio" (also on 106.3 FM). WSEB (1340 AM) is now known as WITS (since 1984), and we know it today as Highlands 104.3 Classic Hits - playing classic hits from the '70s, '80s, and '90s.
