Some of us who were around back in the 1940s, 1950s, and into the early-1960s remember when we had telephone exchange names - officially known as the 2L-5N system - representing 2 letters and 5 numbers for the local telephone number.
Here in Sebring that telephone exchange name was "Evergreen". So if someone said to call them at "Evergreen 5-7890" - then you would dial 385-7890 - since the 3 represents the E on the telephone dial, and the 8 represents the V.
EVergreen 5 (385) was the original telephone exchange for Sebring. EVergreen 2 (382) and EVergreen 6 (386) were added later. Some longtime local residents have had the same telephone number ever since the evergreens. (See what we did there ?)
If you ever wish to call us at our Archives Center - then simply dial GReenway 1-2522. That's 471-2522. Actually - that's 863-471-2522. (We'll cover the 80-year history of area codes here in Sebring in a future edition of #HistoryTuesday.)
