Sebring Historical Society - 60TH Year

#HistoryTuesday - Tuesday September 22ND 2026

Every Tuesday we write about a historical building, person, or event here in Sebring and Highlands County Florida. Sometimes we even go beyond our county line.

Today we're writing about ourselves. As we kickoff our 3RD year of this new era here on Facebook - we're also kicking off our 60TH year as an organization.

You see it was back in 1967 when a group of longtime residents of Sebring got together and thought that their city's 55-year history should be preserved. Ford Walker Heacock Jr. hosted the first formal meeting of this group of interested citizens in his insurance office, and a committee was formed. That led to a public meeting in June 1967 with 35 residents attending. Another meeting in July 1967 created our first Board Of Directors of 9 including President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Back then the mission was clear - to collect photographs, newspapers, letters, maps, and other historical documents for preservation and public access.

59 years later and entering our 60TH year we continue to procure, preserve, protect, and promote the history of Sebring and Highlands County Florida. Our Mission Statement is officially - "to inspire and educate the community to actively preserve, protect, and share the rich history of Sebring and Highlands County Florida."

We thank you for supporting us by following us here on Facebook, by being a member, by being a volunteer, and by attending our many activities and events throughout the year. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization we rely on our supporters to keep us moving forward in our mission.

We hope that this 60TH year of our Sebring Historical Society is the greatest year yet. Let's make history together !
