Here in Highlands County - we share much of our eastern border with Okeechobee County. Along with Hardee, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry, and Highlands - Okeechobee is part of the 6-county Florida Heartland - the vast inland agricultural region of our great state.
About 43,000 residents call Okeechobee County home, but only about 12% actually live within its only city (and county seat) - Okeechobee.
This week marks the 109TH anniversary of the creation of Okeechobee County. It became Florida's 54TH county on May 08TH 1917. What is now 892 square miles of Okeechobee County was formerly parts of Palm Beach, St. Lucie, and Osceola Counties. It was also supposed to include the eastern portion of DeSoto County - which is now Highlands County. Imagine Sebring being part of Okeechobee County.
